Unfinished: this is a project for myself, a large painting of life during late Triassic-early Jurassic times with fossil floras and faunas of the Kayenta Formation in the southwestern U. S. The arid environment with lakes and playas reminded me of parts of the Australian Outback, and I modeled the scattered cycadophyte tyrees and shrubs on this red desert, which I visited in 2000. Oil on panel, showing the reddish underpainting, and blue sky in progress. I work on it when I have time.
Sarahsaurus, sphenodonts, protosuchids, Scelidosaurus, Kayentatherium and other taxa are pictured.
Block diagram showing environments and habitats of the Chinle Formation, with notes.
Sarahsaurus, detail. In progress, oil on panel.
Below are a few of the scientific journal articles I used as research material for the painting, among others.
Clay model of xxx. I make simple models like this to study how to draw and paint shadows, foreshortening, and different angles. These are helpful to do when the fossil taxa have no living relatives.
